GLUCOSAMINE HCL: Glucosamine is found in almost all human tissues, including cartilage.

Historical or traditional use: Used to build and maintain cartilage, treat arthritis and other joint diseases and may relieve the crippling effects of these diseases. Glucosamine provides pain relief and improved function in OA of the knees. May relieve pain associated with muscle injuries, tendonitis. May help repair cartilage.

Activity: Research suggests that combining glucosamine HCI with chondroitin is effective in building and maintaining cartilage. Together, they help joints regain flexibility and range of motion.

How much is usually taken? 1500 mg daily in divided doses.

Side effects or interactions? There are no known contraindications. Few short-term side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, skin rash, and headache have been noted in some but this is rare. There has been an unsubstantiated concern that glucosamine derived from the shellfish exoskeletons may cause reactions in people allergic to shellfish.

CHONDROITIN SULFATE: Found naturally in human cartilage, bone, cornea, skin and the arterial wall.

Historical or traditional use: Studies suggest that Chondroitin repairs and rebuilds damaged cartilage.

Activity: Chondroitin gives cartilage its elasticity & contributes to strength, flexibility, and shock absorption. Helps enhance fluid protection in joints so there is better lubrication and nutrient transport.

How much is usually taken? Recommended dosage is 1200 mg daily in divided doses.

Side effects or interactions? Patients taking blood-thinners should consult a Dr. before use as Chondroitin is chemically similar to blood-thinning drugs such as heparin, warfarin and aspirin.

METHYLSULFONYLMETHANE - MSM: A compound occurring naturally in the human body. MSM is needed for the manufacture of many proteins, including those that form hair, muscles, and skin and maintain connective tissue, cartilage, tendon and ligaments.

Historical or traditional use: Used to help treat arthritis, muscle and back pain, tendonitis to name a few.

Activity: Eases different types of pain and inflammatory conditions. May be more effective than painkillers

How much is usually taken? Studies have shown that 2000 mg or less is adequate for most people.

Side effects or interactions? Some people have experienced mild gastrointestinal upset when taking high doses at the start. Therefore it is best to start with a small dose and build up slowly to avoid this.

HYALURONIC ACID: Hyaluronic Acid is a compound present in every tissue of the body, with the highest concentrations occurring in connective tissues, skin and cartilage. An important constituent of joint fluid where it serves as a lubricant.

Historical or traditional use: Hyaluronic Acid is a new supplement. More studies need to be conducted

SCULLCAP is a member of the mint family.

Historical or traditional use: Scullcap was used historically as a sedative for people with nervous tension and insomnia. It was also used as a remedy for nerve pain and to treat inflammatory skin conditions, allergic diseases, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and high blood pressure.

Active constituents: Chinese scullcap contains flavonoids that have been shown to have protective actions on the liver. Anti-allergy and the inhibition of bacteria and viruses have been noted in test tube studies.

How much is usually taken? 500 – 1000 mg is often used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine.

Side effects or interactions? Due to limited information on the safety during pregnancy and lactation, it is advisable to discontinue use during this time.

BOSWELLIA has been used to treat: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis, Bursitis.

Historical or traditional use: Ancient Ayurvedic medical texts of India reveal that the gummy exudate from boswellia is grouped with other gum resins and referred to collectively as guggals. Historically, the guggals were recommended for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, diarrhea and pulmonary disease.

Active constituents: Consists of essential oils, gum, and terpenoids. Studies have shown that the boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Controlled, double blind studies have shown that boswellia extracts are very helpful for ulcerative colitis.

How much is usually taken? For rheumatoid arthritis and osteosrthritis, 150 mg three times per day.

Side effects or interactions? Boswellia is generally safe when used as directed. Rare side effects can include diarrhea, skin rash, and nausea.

COLLAGEN TYPE II: has been shown to clinically improve joint flexibility and arthritic symptoms.

MANGANESE: Manganese is needed for healthy skin, bone, and cartilage formation, as well as glucose tolerance. It also helps activate superoxide dismutase (SOD)—an important antioxidant enzyme.

Side effects or interactions? Amounts found in supplements (5–20 mg) have not been linked with any toxicity. People with compromised livers should check with their physician before use.

How much is usually taken? 5 – 15 mg is generally considered to be a reasonable level.

ASCORBIC ACID – Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a powerful antioxidant.

Historical or traditional use: Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, the glue that strengthens many parts of the body and plays important roles in wound healing. There are dozens of other health benefits from Vit C.

Side effects or interactions? Some individuals develop diarrhea after excessively high doses of vitamin C.

How much is usually taken? Doctors of natural medicine often recommend 500–1,000 mg per day.
